Good news for the people of Kolkata! Indian Railways is working in full swing to complete the pending work of the country’s first underwater metro network. This metro network is a part of Kolkata Metro‘s East-West corridor. The underwater corridor stretches from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade. The stations of this stretch are almost ready for commissioning.

Railway Board Chairman inspects underwater metro route

On Tuesday, Jaya Varma Sinha, CRB & CEO of Railway Board inspected Howrah Maidan to Esplanade stretch of East-West Metro. Starting from Howrah Maidan station, Sinha travelled up to Esplanade station in a Metro under the river Hooghly. She was accompanied by P Uday Kumar Reddy, General Manager, Metro Railway and senior officials of Metro and Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Ltd (KMRCL).

Sinha travelled in the Motorman’s cabin of a Metro from Howrah Maidan to Howrah station. There, she inspected Passenger Interchanging Points of Metro Railway with Eastern and South Eastern Railway. Later, the CRB instructed all concerned officials to make necessary arrangements to ensure smooth interchange of passengers amongst three railways.

Opening of services at Howrah Maidan Metro Station:-

The 4.8-km-long stretch of East-West Metro from Howrah Maidan to Esplanade is expected to be opened for the general public by next month. 

List of all stations of East-West Metro corridor:- 

At present, only Sealdah to Salt Lake Sector V stretch of the East-West corridor is in operation. The stretch has a total of eight stations on its route – Sealdah, Phoolbagan, Salt Lake stadium, Bengal Chemical, City Centre, Central Park, Karunamoyee, and Salt Lake Sector-V.

After the commencement of operation in the whole corridor, three new stations will be added in the list – Howrah Maidan, Howrah station complex, and BBD Bagh (Mahakaran). Of these, the Howrah Metro station is going to be the deepest Metro station in India.
