The first trial run on the 2.63 km Sealdah–Esplanade stretch of the East-West Metro in Kolkata was successfully conducted on Tuesday (January 21). A statement from Metro Railway Kolkata confirmed that the trial run took place through the west-bound tunnel of the Green Line.
The trial began at 11:20 am from Sealdah Metro station and reached Esplanade Metro station at 11:31 am, with Reddy present in the motorman’s cabin.
The trial run was overseen by Metro Railway General Manager and Chairman of Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Limited (KMRCL), P. Uday Kumar Reddy, along with other senior officers. Following the successful run, Reddy congratulated the team and held a meeting with Metro Railway and KMRCL officers at Esplanade Metro station.
Complete 16-km East-West metro corridor to open this year
Once fully operational, this stretch will allow commuters in Kolkata and surrounding areas to travel easily between Sealdah and Howrah railway stations and different parts of the city, connecting through the Esplanade underground metro station.
The entire 16-km East-West Metro corridor, from Howrah Maidan to Sector V, is expected to be operational later this year. Currently, East-West Metro trains operate on the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade and Sealdah-Sector V stretches.
