Kochi Water Metro, the country’s first water metro system, has achieved a remarkable milestone in less than six months. Inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on April 25, 2023, the project has boosted the economic as well as tourism in the Kochi region.

Passenger growth  

Since its inception, the Kochi Water Metro has catered to more than one million passengers. This reflects the enthusiasm of the commuters in embracing this innovative mode of transportation which promises a brighter and more sustainable future for the city. Till November 7, 2023, a total of 1,113,615 passengers have boarded the Kochi Water Metro. 

Kochi Metro routes

Currently operational in two routes, Kochi Water metro is set to expand its operations on more routes shortly. The project connects 10 islands in and around Kochi with 78 battery-operated electric hybrid boats and 38 terminals. The water metro project has identified the development of 15 routes along a network of routes that span 78 km.

List of terminals in Kochi Water Metro

The Kochi Water Metro has five terminals. These are – Vytilla, High Court, Vypin, Kakkanad, and Bolgatty. Kochi Water Metro Limited (KWML), a joint venture between the Government of Kerala (GoK) with a 74% stake and Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) with a 26% stake, is responsible for the operation and management of the Water Metro.

Global Maritime India Summit 2023

The Kochi Water Metro has won awards in recently held Global Maritime India Summit 2023 for excellence in ferry services and for providing terminals with advanced technologies to connect inland waterways with better services and amenities. 

‘Dream project’ of Kerala

The Kochi Water Metro project has been termed as a ‘dream project’ of the state. The project opened earlier this year has been built at a cost of Rs 1,136.83 crore in the port city.
