India and Spain strengthened their bilateral relations by signing several memorandums of understanding (MOUs) during a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in Vadodara, Gujarat, on Monday. The discussions, held at the historic Laxmi Vilas Palace, included topics such as the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia.
In addressing the situation in Ukraine, PM Modi emphasised India’s long-standing belief that conflicts should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy, stating, “This is not the time for war.” He reiterated the need for direct discussions between the involved parties.
Major bilateral projects
The leaders also focused on enhancing cooperation in various sectors, signing agreements related to infrastructure, railways, culture, and tourism. A notable agreement was established for rail transport collaboration, which will facilitate the planning, design, development, and operation of railway infrastructure and services, including long-distance passenger and freight networks.
Additionally, 2026 was declared the “India-Spain Year of Culture, Tourism, and AI,” promoting cultural exchanges in music, dance, theatre, literature, and festivals through a dedicated program for 2024-2028. An agreement aimed at improving customs cooperation was also signed to facilitate the exchange of information to combat customs offences.
New Spanish consulate in Bengaluru
Furthermore, Spain announced plans to open a consulate in Bengaluru, while India had operationalized its consulate general in Barcelona earlier this year. The Spanish delegation included ministers and executives from 15 leading companies, underscoring the economic potential of the partnership.
The day culminated in a banquet lunch hosted by PM Modi, following the inauguration of the Tata Advanced System Limited-Airbus facility dedicated to manufacturing C-295 military aircraft in India. This collaboration is expected to enhance defence capabilities while further solidifying the ties between the two nations.
