In the wake of the tragic incident at Gokulpuri Metro Station, where a portion of the station’s wall collapsed, claiming a life and injuring several others, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has initiated a thorough inspection of its physical assets across all corridors.
Ensuring Safety Across Pink Line Corridors
Delhi Metro‘s Pink Line, connecting Majlis Park and Shiv Vihar metro stations, has come under special scrutiny, with the DMRC directing a comprehensive inspection of its 26 elevated stations.
Focused Maintenance Efforts
During these inspections, critical components such as drains, parapets, and drain covers are being meticulously examined, with necessary repair work prioritized based on preliminary assessments. Loose concrete or plaster on any DMRC structure is promptly addressed to prevent potential hazards.
Routine Maintenance Amidst Weather Changes
The DMRC underscores that wear and tear on civil structures due to weather changes is a routine occurrence, with teams consistently engaged in maintenance efforts. However, in light of recent events, repair works are being expedited across the network.
Preventive Measures and Precautionary Steps
As part of maintenance inspections, the DMRC has initiated thorough checks on fittings and pipes, particularly drain pipes, across all Metro stations. To mitigate risks, iron pipes are being secured with clamps on a priority basis, with plans to replace them with more durable uPVC pipes.
Recent Incident and Response
Despite ongoing repair works, a drain pipe adjacent to the viaduct at Subhash Nagar Metro Station fell on a road below on February 14. Fortunately, only one woman passerby sustained minor injuries and is currently recovering well, thanks to immediate medical assistance provided by DMRC staff.
Going by these recent incidents, DMRC needs to ensure the safety and integrity of its infrastructure, and implement stringent inspection and maintenance protocols to prevent untoward incidents and safeguard the well-being of commuters and the public.
