Ahead of the Delhi Assembly elections, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to inaugurate Section 4 of the Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) Corridor on Sunday (January 5). This section, which connects Sahibabad to New Ashok Nagar, is set to improve travel between Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

Preparations for the inauguration are now in full swing, with authorities working diligently to enhance the route from Sahibabad RRTS station to New Ashok Nagar. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is also expected to attend the ceremony.

Launch was postponed due to death of Manmohan Singh

Sources aware of the matter told Financial Express that the ‘Namo Bharat’ train will begin operations on this route after the inauguration. The event, originally scheduled for December 29, was delayed following the passing of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

According to the tentative plan, Prime Minister Modi will arrive at Hindon Airbase by air and then travel by road to the Sahibabad station of the Namo Bharat train. He will purchase a ticket and board the train to Anand Vihar station, where the official inauguration will take place.

Extensive security measures will be implemented along both routes, including the deployment of four PAC companies and a significant presence of police personnel. Police officers and gazetted officials from nearby districts will be assigned duties.

The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) and local police are already making necessary arrangements for the event. The route from Hindon Airbase to Sahibabad station, approximately 6.5 km long, will be converted into a green corridor for the Prime Minister’s convoy.

All about Delhi section of RRTS

The new section of the RRTS corridor will include Delhi’s first underground RRTS station at Anand Vihar, along with an elevated station at New Ashok Nagar. The full 82 km RRTS corridor, extending from Jangpura in Delhi to Modipuram in Meerut, is expected to be completed by mid-2025. Currently, the 42km functional portion of the RRTS is entirely located in Uttar Pradesh.

Final trial runs underway

Namo Bharat trains are currently undergoing final trial runs on the Sahibabad-to-Delhi segment, which includes key stations at Anand Vihar and New Ashok Nagar. Anand Vihar will feature the first underground station on the RRTS corridor. Once completed, the corridor will span 55 km, providing Namo Bharat services between Sahibabad and New Ashok Nagar.

To improve commuter convenience, NCRTC has launched a loyalty points program, offering a 10% discount on fares for passengers who purchase QR code-based tickets via the RRTS Connect app.
