The Shri Mato Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB) has declared it will go ahead with the long-anticipated ropeway project. The initiative aims to provide pilgrims with a safer and faster option for the 13-kilometer trek to the holy shrine. ‘’The ropeway project will be transformative, especially for the pilgrims who face difficulty in climbing to the shrine,’’ mentioned Anshul Garg, CEO of SMVDSB. He highlighted that the project would benefit the growing number of pilgrims who are visiting the sacred site every year.

Record number of pilgrims

As per the latest report, pilgrimage has marked a record-breaking number as more than 95 lakh devotees have visited Mata Vaishno Devi in 2023. This major surge outlined the need for enhanced infrastructure, prompting the board to permit the ropeway plan.

Gard stated, ‘’The ropeway will be a blessing for senior citizens, pilgrims and those who have physical challenges and consider the trek tough’’. He also noted that helicopter services are limited and are not able to meet the demand. Under the new system, the yatra for the pilgrims will be made more accessible and inclusive.

All about the ropeway project

The project will interlink Tarakote Marg to Bhawan, the shrine’s main area and pilgrims will also be able to witness breathtaking views of the Trikuta hills. According to officials, by doing careful planning will lessen the environmental impact while enhancing the spiritual experience.

Garg also informed, ‘’We are committed to address the issues of the locals and to make sure the pilgrims’ experience is enhanced for all’’. Meanwhile, the board has also promised to allow the participation of local stakeholders before executing the project.

Once the project is implemented, the ropeway is anticipated to cater to transporting thousands of pilgrims daily. It will also cut down the travel time from several hours to just in minutes. This development will help in easing congestion on the usual trekking route and will make the journey smoother for the devotees.
