India’s defence manufacturing sector is gradually shifting toward higher private-sector participation after decades of dependence on state-owned entities and imported platforms. The change follows policy moves that opened the sector to more foreign investment and encouraged domestic production.
Ministry of Defence on production
The Ministry of Defence said India recorded defence production of about Rs 1.27 lakh crore in FY24, with private companies contributing around 20%. The ministry estimates defence exports at roughly Rs 21,000 crore in the same period.
Private player
Vijayan Trishul Defence Solutions (VTDS) is among the companies entering this space. The firm operates from a UPEIDA facility and focuses on small arms and ammunition manufacturing. The company said it aims to build indigenous systems rather than assemble imported equipment.
VTDS is led by Founder and managing director Sahil Luthra, who positions the company’s objectives around reducing external reliance in supply chains. co-founder and director Prikansha Luthra oversees operations and financial strategy. Her role points to a gradual increase in female participation in defence manufacturing, which remains limited compared to other sectors.
