Rani Kapur, mother of late industrialist Sunjay Kapur and widow of Sona Group founder Surinder Kapur, has expressed serious concerns over attempts to sideline her from the family’s legacy business, Sona BLW Precision Forgings (Sona Comstar). In a detailed letter to shareholders ahead of the company’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), she alleged coercion, exclusion from key decisions and lack of access to her own financial accounts.

The letter surfaced just before the July 25 AGM and has raised eyebrows due to the timing and gravity of the allegations. According to Rani, she was forced to sign important documents behind closed doors while she was in a vulnerable emotional state after the sudden death of her son in June. These documents, she claims, are being used to misrepresent control over the family’s legacy.

Who Is Rani Kapur?

Rani Kapur is the widow of Surinder Kapur, the founder of the Sona Group, a pioneer in India’s auto component industry. Surinder Kapur was instrumental in supporting Maruti Suzuki’s localisation efforts in the 1980s. After his death, their son Sunjay Kapur became MD of Sona BLW Precision Forgings while Rani Kapur was the Chairperson and the sole beneficiary of her husband’s estate.

According to her letter, Rani Kapur is also the largest shareholder in the broader Sona Group and a member of the promoter group along with the RK Family Trust. Official shareholding data shows she holds 72 shares in Sona BLW, indicating her long association with the business.

Company Denies Allegations, Appoints New Director

Sona Comstar said Rani Kapur is not a shareholder of the company and hence the company was not required to take her on board for board decisions. The AGM went ahead as scheduled on July 25 where Priya Sachdev Kapur—Sunjay Kapur’s widow—was appointed as a non-executive director by promoter Aureus Investments Pvt Ltd.

The company clarified that Rani’s letter was received on July 24 evening and after taking legal advice, the company found no reason to delay the meeting. It also said no documents were signed or obtained from Rani Kapur after Sunjay’s death and reiterated its commitment to due process and corporate governance.
