India is one of the fastest growing markets for eBay. Significantly, it is the tier-II and tier-III cities that are driving e-commerce in India, says a new Census 2014 report by eBay India. People across 4,556 e-commerce hubs in the country with 3,313 tier-II and tier-III cities and 1,233 rural hubs are dominating shopping trends, says Vidmay Naini, director and business head, eBay India.
“Increased internet penetration, coupled with a surge in usage of mobile phones, have made India one of the fastest growing e-commerce markets globally. India has the third-largest internet user base in the world, clocking over 243 million users,” he points out.
Guntur and Tada in Andhra Pradesh, Karthikappally in Kerala, Ghattia in Madhya Pradesh, Chorayasi in Gujarat, Jalgaon in Maharashtra, Budgam in Jammu and Kashmir, Cachar in Assam, Adur in Kerala and Villupuram in Tamil Nadu emerged as the top 10 rural hubs in the year.
Women shoppers continue to fuel lifestyle consumption and the lifestyle category has increased its share of the pie to 45%, trailing the electronics category by just 2% over the previous year.
According to eBay India Census 2014, the increasing usage of mobile devices to access the internet, in conjunction with the deep penetration of mobile phones in non-metros, have led to an increase in the number of people shopping online. eBay India has received around 43% of traffic through mobile devices with 40% of products traded through mobile devices in India.
