India’s digital infrastructure just got a major boost. Techno Digital, the digital infrastructure arm of  Techno Electric & Engineering Company, will unveil its 36 MW data centre at Siruseri Sipcot IT Park in Chennai on Thursday. This next-gen facility is a part of Techno Digital’s $1 billion investment towards building future-ready, sustainable digital infrastructure across the country. It plans to build a network of hyperscale and edge data centres with 250 MW combined capacity over five years.

While hyperscale data centres are huge facilities that store and process massive workloads and data for large companies, edge data centres house computing and storage resources in a smaller footprint and are closer to end-users. India is projected to see a significant surge in its data centre capacity, with analysts predicting it will reach approximately 17 GW by 2030, up from1.3 GW at present.

“Our Chennai AI-ready hyperscale data centre is a big step in advancing India’s self-reliance initiative. This launch goes beyond infrastructure; it represents a strategic investment in building a future-ready digital ecosystem,” Ankit Saraiya, director & CEO, Techno Digital, told FE in an interview. “Though we lead the world in data consumption, our share of global data centre capacity remains less than 3%—a gap that represents one of the greatest opportunities of our time,” he said.

Robust digital infrastructure

According to Saraiya, India’s burgeoning digital economy demands a comprehensive focus on building a robust digital infrastructure. “With the rise in data consumption, rapid cloud adoption, and advancements in AI and 5G rollout, data centres are the strategic pillars that deliver scalable, secure, and efficient solutions to meet this demand. Additionally, with sustainability becoming a key consideration, setting up energy-efficient facilities is the way forward,” he said.

The Kolkata-headquartered Techno Electric & Engineering Company specialises in engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services for power generation, transmission and distribution. “Our strong credentials in power infrastructure strategically positions us to partner with enterprises looking to modernise and scale their digital operations,” Saraiya said.

Techno Digital’s plans to set up data centre in Noida

Besides Chennai, Techno Digital plans to set up a 18 MW data centre in Noida in 2026 and a 13 MW facility in Kolkata in 2027. “We’ve recently completed an edge data centre in Gurgaon, and work has begun on a similar facility in Mumbai. We’ve finalised lands in Indore and Gandhinagar, and work on our data centres in Kolkata and Noida has already started,” Saraiya said.

Techno Digital has partnered with RailTel, a government-owned telecom firm, to develop 102 edge data centres in 102 cities across India. “This project will be the largest deployments of its kind, bringing low-latency computing closer to users in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities, empowering sectors such as AI, BFSI, telecom, OTT, e-sports, healthcare, e-governance, and manufacturing,” Saraiya said, adding, “the endeavour is to establish the largest footprint of data centres in the country.”

Giving details about the Chennai data centre, Saraiya said, the facility is spread over 200,000 sq. ft and will deliver a hosting capacity of about 2,400 high-density racks. The 36MW data centre is designed to support flexible power densities from 10 kW to 50 kW per rack and beyond, making it one of India’s most advanced AI-ready infrastructures. Also, it has efficient cooling architecture featuring centrifugal water-cooled chillers and adiabatic cooling towers, thus enabling

superior power usage effectiveness (PUE) and reducing water consumption by 75%.
