Microsoft representatives in India may have misled the government over interception and real time monitoring of communications over the Skype network even though it does not have servers installed in the country.

Government sources said Microsoft representatives had sometime back told some senior telecom department officials that they can provide interception and monitoring of its Skype operations in India.

Sources said the interception and monitoring of encrypted communication of Skype is possible only in cases if an overseas call made from Skype terminates on a fixed line or mobile in India. Then the interception would be via domestic operator’s network. In cases of a Skype-to-Skype call, interception cannot take place and that’s a security hazard.

Microsoft declined to comment.
