Adani Group on Tuesday announced its foray into Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), unveiling plans to set up India’s largest such facility with a capacity of 1,126 MW at its renewable energy park at Khavda in Gujarat.
The project, slated for commissioning by March 2026, will involve the deployment of more than 700 BESS containers and will be among the world’s largest single-location energy storage installations, the group said in an official statement.
The facility will be capable of storing 3,530 MWh of energy, extending the power capacity of 1,126 MW by about three hours. The group also plans to add another 15 GWh of BESS capacity by March 2027, with a long-term target of 50 GWh over the next five years.
Gautam Adani, chairman of Adani Group, said, “With this historic project, we are not only setting global benchmarks but also reinforcing our commitment to India’s energy independence and sustainability. This initiative will enable us to deliver reliable, clean, and affordable energy solutions at scale.”
The Khavda project, which is in advanced stages of deployment, will use lithium-ion battery technology integrated with advanced energy management systems to ensure optimal performance and reliability, the company added.
The group, however, did not disclose the investment details.
The country has set a target to reach 500 GW of energy capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 20230, and battery storage is critical given the intermittency of renewable power, sources said.
