Russia launched a total of 57 missiles and drones on Sunday targeting Ukraine, with strikes hitting both Kyiv and the western region of Lviv. Poland’s armed forces noted that one of Russia’s cruise missiles briefly entered Polish airspace. Ukraine’s air force claimed to have successfully intercepted and destroyed 18 out of 29 missiles launched by Russia, along with 25 out of 28 attack drones, Ukraine’s air force said on the Telegram messaging app.
Russia’s continued assault on Ukraine
Russia has launched airstrikes on Ukraine for several days, depicting these assaults as retaliation for alleged Ukrainian provocations during its recent presidential election. “For the third pre-dawn morning this week, all of Ukraine is under an air alert and has been advised to seek shelter,” U.S. Ambassador Bridget Brink posted on X early on Sunday.
Strikes near Polish border
These strikes occurred shortly after Vladimir Putin’s pledge to retaliate for the ISIS terror attack on a Moscow concert hall, with the Russian president vowing to punish those responsible. A cruise missile launched by Russia toward the Lviv region of Western Ukraine violated Poland’s airspace, remaining there for 39 seconds near the town of Oserdow in Lublin Voivodeship, according to Poland’s armed forces.
Incursion detected in Polish airspace
The armed forces reported this incident on the social media platform X, stating that military radar systems closely monitored the object throughout its flight. Prior to this, Poland and allied aircraft were mobilised to safeguard the integrity of Poland’s airspace. Meanwhile, Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi conveyed via Telegram that while there were no direct attacks on the city of Lviv, approximately 20 missiles and seven attack drones were deployed against critical infrastructure within the broader Lviv region.
Meanwhile, Lviv’s mayor noted that while the city itself was spared, the broader Lviv region endured attacks on critical infrastructure, with some 20 missiles and seven drones deployed. These assaults come amid a series of daily Russian strikes, which Moscow claims are retaliatory measures against Ukrainian actions during Russia’s recent presidential election.
