Ukraine’s Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, is arriving in Delhi on a two-day visit today with hopes of garnering support for an upcoming peace summit, expected to take place this summer, though India’s level of participation remains undecided. Despite India’s reserved stance on Russia’s invasion, Kuleba remains optimistic about fostering stronger relations between the two nations.
Ahead of his two-day visit to the Indian capital, which commences on Wednesday, Kuleba invoked Mahatma Gandhi, seeking India’s support for Ukraine’s pursuit of “freedom and independence.” This marks Kuleba’s first trip to India since assuming office in 2020, amidst the conflict that began in 2022.
Kuleba’s visit, initiated at the invitation of his Indian counterpart, S Jaishankar, aims to strengthen ties and explore avenues for collaboration. He is expected to co-chair a meeting of the bilateral inter-governmental commission and engage in discussions to advance mutual interests, particularly regarding the upcoming peace summit led by neutral Switzerland. The Swiss led peace summit aims to build upon President Zelenskyy’s proposed peace framework.
While India’s stance on participation in the peace summit remains uncertain, Kuleba’s visit underscores Ukraine’s appeal for support in rebuilding its war-torn economy, with a keen interest in attracting investment from Indian companies. The timing of India’s involvement may hinge on its upcoming general elections, scheduled in seven phases between April 19 and June 1.
