SIA-India (Satcom Industry Association) and ISAC (Information Sharing and Analysis Centre) have united to establish common platform cybersecurity standards within the space sector.
This collaboration, marked by an important MoU signing in February 2024, is dedicated to fortifying critical space infrastructure through innovative cybersecurity standards. Lt Gen PJS Pannu, Sr. Advisor and Chair Defence Space Committee at SIA-India, emphasized the significance of this partnership in mitigating cyber threats that could disrupt satellite operations and communication channels.
In addition to setting new standards, both organizations are preparing to introduce specialized training and certification programs. These initiatives aim to equip space professionals with essential skills to safeguard vital space infrastructure.
Rajshekhar Pullabhatla, Director of ISAC, highlighted the importance of empowering space professionals to pre-empt cyber-attacks and enhance incident response capabilities.
India’s space sector, valued at US$8.4 billion and projected to reach US$44 billion by 2033, is witnessing rapid growth with the involvement of both ISRO and the private sector. The emergence of over 200 startups and ISRO’s ambitious plans underscore the importance of securing space assets to protect billions in GDP and national security interests. Globally, attacks on space infrastructure have surged, with notable incidents such as the NotPetya cyber-attack inflicting substantial damage.
The collaboration between SIA-India and ISAC aims to create a cohesive framework for safeguarding space infrastructure. Standardization ensures a unified approach to security measures, while specialized training equips professionals to proactively identify and mitigate cyber threats. Anil Prakash, Director General of SIA-India, emphasized the critical need for robust cybersecurity measures in light of the high risk posed by global cyberattacks on satellite infrastructure.
Overall, the partnership between SIA-India and ISAC represents a significant milestone in enhancing space cybersecurity standards. By leveraging expertise and fostering innovation, both organizations are committed to ensuring the integrity and security of space infrastructure as India continues its journey as a global space leader.
