The Frontier Headquarter of the Border Security Force (BSF) in Salbagan, Agartala, Tripura, in an official statement issued on July 21, 2024, addressed the significant security challenges arising from the ongoing anti-reservation protests in Bangladesh. These challenges are particularly relevant for the BSF stationed in Tripura, a state bordered on all sides by Bangladesh. One of the primary concerns is ensuring the safe return of Indian students studying in Bangladesh.

It is estimated that nearly 8,000 Indian students are currently studying in Bangladesh, with a majority enrolled in medical colleges in Comilla, Brahmanbaria, and Dhaka. Many of these students are seeking to re-enter India through four Integrated Check Posts (ICPs) and Land Customs Stations (LCSs), particularly via Agartala in West Tripura district and Srimantapur in Sepahijala district. Yesterday, the BSF facilitated the entry of 365 students, with approximately 300 passing through ICP Srimantapur.

The BSF has made comprehensive arrangements at these ICPs to ensure the students’ safe arrival, including providing refreshments, food packets, transportation, and medical aid. The BSF is in close coordination with local administration and other agencies to ensure the entire process is smooth and efficient. Clear directions have been given to officers to personally supervise the arrival of these students to avoid any inconvenience.

In one specific incident, a parent of a student at Brahmanbaria Medical College, located about 40 kilometers from the Agartala border, contacted the BSF for assistance due to the stoppage of internet and mobile services in Bangladesh. The BSF immediately coordinated with the region commander, and through the joint efforts of the border guarding forces, safe passage was arranged for 36 students from Brahmanbaria to the Agartala border. This operation, conducted seamlessly and professionally, is a testament to the strong cooperation and good relations between the BSF and the Bangladesh Border Guard (BGB).

The BSF anticipates more students crossing over in the coming days and is fully prepared to provide all necessary assistance to ensure their safe return. The prevailing law and order situation poses a security concern for the BSF, as it is responsible for guarding the border. In response, security measures have been intensified to prevent any criminal elements from exploiting the situation.

BSF troops are on high alert, and maximum personnel have been mobilized to the border, with senior commanders stationed there to ensure high operational preparedness. The BSF remains fully committed to securing the boundaries of India in Tripura and is prepared to tackle any challenges that may arise due to the current situation.
