Former Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah has ignited a firestorm of controversy by alleging that Indian security forces are colluding with terrorists to destabilise the region. The provocative remarks have drawn sharp criticism from security experts, political leaders, and the public, who have condemned the statement as both baseless and damaging to national security.

Abdullah’s accusation, made in the wake of a deadly gunfight in Anantnag district that claimed the lives of two Indian Army personnel and a civilian, has been widely denounced. Critics have accused the veteran politician of making irresponsible and inflammatory statements that undermine the sacrifices of the Indian Army.

“Farooq Abdullah’s comments are not just inaccurate, they are an affront to every soldier who has laid down their life in defence of our nation,” said a senior military official, speaking on condition of anonymity. “These baseless allegations do nothing but demoralise our forces and weaken the nation’s resolve against terrorism.”

Sources in the defence and security establishment have pointed to the significant reduction in terrorist infiltration attempts as evidence of the Indian Army’s effectiveness. Data shows that recorded infiltration attempts have plummeted from 219 in 2019 to just 48 last year, with no successful infiltrations reported this year. The number of foiled infiltration bids has also increased, with 17 such attempts thwarted in 2023 compared to just one in 2017.

Jammu & Kashmir’s Director General of Police (DGP) RR Swain was equally forthright in his condemnation of Abdullah’s remarks. “Our forces have lost over 7,000 lives in the fight against terrorism. To suggest they are colluding with terrorists is not only deplorable but also deeply disrespectful to their memory,” Swain said. He added that such statements could have dangerous repercussions, potentially emboldening terrorist groups and eroding public trust in the security forces.

Critics have also suggested that Abdullah’s remarks may be politically motivated, aimed at regaining lost influence after his party’s recent electoral setbacks. “It’s no secret that Abdullah’s political relevance has waned in recent years, and this appears to be a desperate attempt to stir controversy and stay in the spotlight,” said a political analyst familiar with the region’s dynamics.

As public outrage continues to grow, there are increasing calls for accountability and for leaders to refrain from making statements that could jeopardise national security. “In times like these, unity and responsible leadership are more important than ever. Farooq Abdullah’s reckless words have done a disservice to the nation, and he should be held accountable for the damage they have caused,” the military official concluded.

While the Indian Army has yet to issue an official response, the controversy has highlighted the need for measured and responsible discourse, particularly from those in positions of power. The sacrifices made by the Indian Army in protecting the nation’s borders deserve respect and recognition, not baseless accusations that only serve to divide.
