Amid ongoing protests in Bangladesh, nearly 1,000 Indian students have returned home, facilitated by the coordinated efforts of the Indian High Commission and its Assistant High Commissions in Dhaka, Chittagong, Rajshahi, Sylhet, and Khulna. Approximately 778 students travelled through various land ports, while around 200 flew back via regular flights from Dhaka and Chittagong airports.
The Indian High Commission in Dhaka, in collaboration with local authorities, has been instrumental in ensuring the safe passage of these students. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has been working closely with civil aviation, immigration, land port, and Border Security Force (BSF) authorities to guarantee a smooth transition for returning students.
According to an official statement issued by MEA on Saturday (July 20,2024) despite the challenges, the Indian High Commission remains in constant contact with over 4,000 students still in Bangladesh, offering continuous support and assistance. Additionally, students from Nepal and Bhutan have received help in crossing into India upon request.
To ensure the safety of Indian nationals, the High Commission has arranged security escorts for road travel during repatriation through select land ports. Regular communication with Bangladeshi authorities has been maintained to ensure the security of Indian students and nationals.
Furthermore, the High Commission in Dhaka is working with Bangladesh’s civil aviation authorities and commercial airlines to maintain uninterrupted flight services to India. These efforts highlight the Indian government’s dedication to the welfare of its citizens abroad, ensuring their safe return amidst the unrest in Bangladesh.
