The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) condoled the tragic demise of Colonel Waibhav Anil Kale (retd), an Indian national serving with the United Nations in Gaza.

Official statement of MEA

“We are deeply saddened by the death of Colonel Waibhav Anil Kale (Retd.), Security Coordination Officer in the UN Department of Safety and Security (DSS) in Gaza on 13 May 2024. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and dear ones.”

Adding, “Our Permanent Mission to the UN in New York and our Missions in Tel Aviv and Ramallah are extending all assistance in the repatriation of mortal remains to India and continue to be in touch with relevant authorities regarding the investigation into the incident.”

Colonel Kale lost his life when the vehicle he was traveling in was attacked in Gaza’s Rafah region on Monday. The MEA affirmed its commitment to assisting in repatriating Colonel Kale’s mortal remains to India, with India’s Permanent Mission to the UN in New York and its missions in Tel Aviv and Ramallah actively engaged in the process.

Colonel Kale, aged 46, had retired from the Indian Army in June 2022, having specialized in counter-terrorism. His service extended to the United Nations, where he worked as a peacekeeper. His untimely death marks the first time a UN international staff member has perished in the Israel-Hamas conflict since October 2023.

The Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations, New York, also expressed deep condolences, acknowledging Colonel Kale’s dedicated service to the UN Department of Safety and Security in Gaza. The tragic incident prompted the United Nations to launch an investigation into the missile strike that claimed Colonel Kale’s life.

Financial Express Online has reported previously that UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reiterated the urgent need for a humanitarian ceasefire and the release of hostages in Gaza. He emphasized the toll the conflict is taking, not only on civilians but also on humanitarian workers like Colonel Kale.

Colonel Waibhav Anil Kale’s death serves as a sad reminder of the risks faced by those working to bring stability and peace to conflict zones. His sacrifice underscores the importance of international cooperation in addressing the root causes of conflicts and ensuring the safety of all personnel involved in peacekeeping and humanitarian efforts worldwide.
