Recent protests at Columbia University and other universities across the United States have drawn attention from India, sparking a diplomatic response regarding the delicate balance between freedom of expression and public order.
India’s stance on the matter stresses the importance of maintaining this balance in democracies, underscoring the need for a sense of responsibility alongside the exercise of freedom.
Responding to queries related to the ongoing student protests in various universities in the US, the official spokesperson of Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Randhir Jaiswal highlighted the significance of demonstrating understanding and respect for the principles of democracy, especially when dealing with fellow democratic nations.
This subtly implies that actions speak louder than words, highlighting the importance of upholding democratic values both domestically and internationally.
On protests at Columbia University and Universities in the US MEA said:
“We have seen reports on the matter and have been following related events. In every democracy, there has to be the right balance between freedom of expression, sense of responsibility and public safety and order. Democracies in particular should display this understanding in regard to other fellow democracies. Afterall, we are all judged by what we do at home and not what we say abroad.”
Addressing concerns about Indian students’ involvement in protests, the official spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified that neither the Embassy nor any Consulate in the US has received requests for assistance regarding disciplinary actions related to these demonstrations. And reaffirming the expectation for all Indian citizens, whether at home or abroad, to abide by local laws and regulations.
MEA said:
“Neither the Embassy nor any Consulate has been approached by Indian students or their family seeking assistance regarding any disciplinary action for participation in protests in the universities. We expect all our citizens at home and abroad to respect local laws and regulations.”
Significance of the Response
The response underscores the broader diplomatic considerations surrounding student activism and the role of foreign nationals in host countries. It highlights the need for individuals to engage responsibly with their rights to free expression while respecting the legal frameworks and societal norms of the countries they reside in.
Bottomline
The statement reflects India’s commitment to upholding the rule of law and promoting responsible citizenship, both domestically and internationally. And serves as a reminder to Indian students studying abroad to be mindful of their actions and to conduct themselves in a manner that aligns with the laws and customs of their host countries.
