India stands in solemn remembrance as it mourns the passing of Subedar Thanseia, a distinguished veteran of the Indian Army’s Assam Regiment, who breathed his last at the age of 102 after a brief illness.
Hailing from the state of Mizoram, Subedar Thanseia’s life was marked by extraordinary acts of valour, notably his pivotal role in the Battle of Kohima during World War II and his instrumental efforts in establishing the legacy of the 1st Assam Regiment during their critical deployment at Jessami.

According to sources in the defence and security establishment, “throughout his illustrious career, Subedar Thanseia exemplified a steadfast commitment to his nation, going above and beyond the call of duty. His courageous actions at Kohima, where he faced daunting odds, contributed significantly to a crucial Allied victory, thereby turning the tide of the conflict in the East.”
Adding, “Even in retirement, Subedar Thanseia continued to serve as a beacon of inspiration, actively engaging in veteran affairs and educational initiatives, leaving an indelible mark on the community and country he held dear.”
The outpouring of tributes from both military and civilian spheres underscores the profound impact of Subedar Thanseia’s life and service. “As Northeast India mourns the loss of a cherished hero, it also celebrates his extraordinary contributions and unwavering dedication to the nation’s cause.
