OpenAI’s popular AI chatbot, ChatGPT, suffered a major global outage today. According to Downdetector, the platform tracking real-time disruptions, reports of problems with ChatGPT surged dramatically beginning shortly before 3 PM IST. The peak saw over 1,100 user complaints, indicating widespread service interruptions. The initial surge in reports began around 2:45 PM IST, reaching its apex by 3:02 PM IST. Prior to this, ChatGPT services had experienced minimal disruptions over the preceding 24 hours.

Users quickly took to social media platforms, particularly X (formerly Twitter), to voice their frustrations. Timelines were flooded with screenshots depicting blank chat windows, incomplete responses, persistent server errors, and failed loading attempts. Many also reported being unexpectedly logged out or caught in frustrating login loops. Others described the chatbot becoming unresponsive mid-session, leading to lost work and conversations.

OpenAI acknowledged the issues on its official status page, stating, “Some users are experiencing elevated error rates and latency across listed services. We are investigating.” However, no specific timeline for resolution or the cause of the outage was immediately provided.

‘Sorry we overused and made you sick’

Social media timelines quickly became a hub for memes and witty remarks. A user wrote, “ChatGPT is down, it’s so over for me.” Another claimed, “is ChatGPT down for anyone else? i’m a neurosurgeon in the middle of brain surgery.” Another added,
“So, how many people were asking ChatGPT the most existential questions, and then the whole system crashed? Maybe we all asked the same question, and the system did not want to reply. What do you think?, added a netizen. A user stated,”Sorry we overused and made you sick.”
