A SpiceJet plane headed from Mumbai to Kolkata had to make an emergency landing on Sunday, according to Kolkata Airport officials. Flight SG670 has since landed safely, with authorities withdrawing the full emergency at 11:38 pm.

Airport officials confirmed the safety of more than 170 passengers and crew members, who ultimately landed at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata. The plane had taken off from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport in Mumbai.

“The flight, SG670, was carrying more than 188 people (passengers and crew) and landed safely at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport around 11:38 pm. The pilot had declared a full emergency as a precaution,” said an official.

Reports, as also cited by the Indian Express, suggested that the pilot had become cognisant of the technical snag right before the plane started its descent. Air Traffic Control (ATC) was promptly intimated about the abnormality.

Reports cited sources indicating that the flight faced a nearly two-hour delay before take off. The SpiceJet plane reportedly departed from Mumbai at 9:07 pm instead of its scheduled 7:10 pm slot.

Authorities have yet to publicly announce the cause of the engine malfunction. An internal investigation is reportedly underway. SpiceJet was also yet to issue a formal public release at the time of writing.

This is a developing story.
