IndiGo flight delays and cancellations LIVE: Delhi International Airport has issued a fresh advisory for passengers, warning that IndiGo flights may continue to face delays. Travellers have been urged to check their latest flight status with the airline before leaving for the airport to avoid last-minute trouble.

DGCA grants final extension to IndiGo

The DGCA on Sunday granted IndiGo’s top executives extra time to respond to the show-cause notice issued over the airline’s recent large-scale operational disruptions. IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers said the airline’s planned reboot on Friday, which saw many flights cancelled, helped stabilise operations.

By Saturday, the airline ran around 1,500 flights, up from just over 700 on Friday, and aimed to operate 1,650 flights on Sunday with on-time performance improving to 75%. Elbers added that 137 stations are back in action, and processes like refunds, baggage tracing, and rebooking are steadily catching up.

IndiGo Flight Cancellation Today LIVE: Status, refunds, delay alerts, Delhi Airport advisory & cancellations

IndiGo has announced that over 95% of its network connectivity has now been restored. However, the airline continues to face operational challenges, with more than 100 flights cancelled on December 7 (today). Hyderabad airport reported 115 cancellations, while Chennai recorded 38, leaving many passengers still dealing with uncertainty and delays despite the airline’s recovery claims.

IndiGo flight disruptions have now entered their sixth straight day — with the Indian government stepping in to address mounting passenger grievances. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation also sent a show cause notice to the company and asked CEO Pieter Elbers to respond within 24 hours. The airline cancelled nearly 400 flights on Saturday as chaos reigned at multiple airports.

With several IndiGo flights cancelled, Indian Railways is coming to the rescue by running special trains across the country. Footage from New Delhi Railway Station and Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station in Delhi shows travelers lining up to catch these extra trains. The move is meant to help people stuck because of the flight disruptions. Passengers are being advised to check train timings and book tickets early, as a lot of people are expected to use these services.

The flight cancellations are the biggest crisis in IndiGo’s 20 years of operation. The airline has a more than 60% market share in the world’s most-populous country and has prided itself on on-time performance and affordable fares. IndiGo has said it failed to plan adequately for the November 1 deadline to implement the stricter rules on night flying and weekly rest for pilots. It suffered a roster crisis this week as December is the peak time for holidays and weddings in India.

The new pilot rest and duty rules capped the number of night landings to two from six and restricted the maximum number of hours a pilot can fly in the night to 10 hours. For now, IndiGo has been exempted from both measures until February 10.

DGCA launches probe, sends show cause notice

The civil aviation watchdog sent the notice to IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers on Saturday evening — giving him 24 hours to explain why regulatory action should not be taken against the airline. This can include penalties and suspension of officials. The DGCA notice alleged that the CEO had failed in his “duty to ensure timely arrangements for conduct of reliable operations”. It cited inadequate arrangements to handle the revised flight duty time limitations as the primary cause of the flight disruptions.

“DGCA has constituted a four-member committee to review the factors behind the recent large-scale operational disruptions in IndiGo Airlines. The committee will assess gaps in crew planning, operational preparedness and compliance with revised FDTL norms to prevent such incidents in the future,” MoS Aviation Murlidhar Mohol wrote on X.

Government sources told PTI that Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu and senior officials of the ministry had also held a “serious meeting” with Elbers on Saturday to review the situation and address the issues. Authorities have assured that they will take appropriate action on the IndiGo flight disruptions depending on the inquiry committee findings.

Govt steps in to clear refunds, halt fare hikes

The government invoked special powers on Saturday to regulate surging flight prices amid the crisis. Airfare had soared past the Rs 1 lakh mark on some domestic routes as IndiGo left thousands of passengers in the lurch this week. An official directive was issued to all airlines mandating strict adherence to the newly prescribed fare caps.

Airlines have been asked to charge up to Rs 7,500 for a distance up to 500 km and Rs 12,000 for the 500 km to 1,000 km range. Fares have been capped at Rs 15,000 for passengers travelling between 1,000 km and 1,500 km. Those travelling for distances above 1,500 km on an economy ticket will be charged a maximum of Rs 18,000. The order clarified that these limits will apply until airfares stabilise or further review. It is valid for all types of bookings — whether through official airline websites or online agents.

IndiGo airline crisis LIVE: Prithviraj Chavan warns aviation monopoly threatens economy, demands split of IndiGo

Former Union Minister Prithviraj Chavan of the Congress on Monday raised concerns over the growing monopoly in India’s aviation sector, calling it a “serious threat” to the economy and passenger interests. He demanded that crisis-hit IndiGo be split into two companies to ensure fair competition.

Talking to reporters, Chavan highlighted that India’s air travel is now dominated by just two major players: IndiGo, holding 65 per cent market share, and the Tata Group (Air India and AI Express) with nearly 30 per cent. “In 2004, India had 10 functional airlines. Today, only two big companies remain. With nearly 40 crore passengers relying on them, this situation will only become more serious in the future,” the former Maharashtra Chief Minister cautioned.

Chavan described the recent IndiGo disruptions, which have affected flights across the country for the past week, as “unfortunate and shocking,” attributing the crisis to regulatory lapses and alleged collusion between the government and private airlines. He called for the resignation of Union Civil Aviation Minister Rammohan Naidu, suspension of the IndiGo CEO, and dismissal of DGCA officials responsible for the lapses.

To promote competition, the Congress leader suggested splitting the leading carrier into two companies with a maximum market share of 30 per cent each. He also urged the government to start its own national airline and implement the Civil Aviation Authority proposed during the UPA regime to strengthen sector oversight.

Chavan further demanded the creation of a Rs 1,000 crore compensation fund for passengers affected by flight disruptions and high ticket prices. Criticizing the Competition Commission for failing to prevent monopolistic control, he called for its dissolution and replacement by a new empowered body.
