Air Kerala, a new entrant to India’s aviation sector, has announced its plans to commence operations by June next year. The airline’s inaugural flight will take off from Kannur International Airport, marking the beginning of its journey in regional aviation. While the maiden destination remains undisclosed, Air Kerala has finalised key appointments, including its CEO and CFO, and inked a strategic pact with Kannur International Airport Ltd (KIAL) to launch its services.
Focus on Regional Connectivity
Under its agreement with KIAL, Air Kerala will initially operate a significant number of departures from Kannur, connecting nearby domestic destinations within a flying range of 90 minutes. This strategic focus aims to bolster regional connectivity and establish a solid base for future operations.
Highlighting Kannur International Airport’s pivotal role, Air Kerala Chairman Afi Ahmed expressed gratitude for the airport’s support. “Infrastructure at Kannur Airport is ready, and the management has extended full support to establish our base,” Ahmed said. “Kannur International Airport will play a major role in our operational strategy.”
Fleet Plans and Expansion Goals
To begin with, Air Kerala plans to operate regional twin-engine turboprop ATR aircraft. As the airline scales up, it intends to transition to narrow-body jets, signalling its ambitions for expanded services. Air Kerala’s long-term vision includes international operations that will connect Kannur with global destinations. The airline’s domestic network is designed to seamlessly link regional passengers to international flights through Kannur Airport, transforming it into a major hub for international air travel.
Having received a no-objection certificate from the Civil Aviation Ministry in July, Air Kerala is now applying for a flying permit from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). This approval will pave the way for the airline to commence its commercial operations as planned.
Air Kerala envisions itself as a provider of affordable, reliable, and efficient travel options for passengers. With its strategic partnership with Kannur Airport, the airline is set to redefine regional and international travel experiences for Kerala and beyond.
As the countdown to June 2025 begins, Air Kerala’s ambitious plans signal a promising new chapter in India’s aviation industry.
