As part of Odisha’s ambitious New Destination Policy (NDP) 2024, new flight services were inaugurated on Friday, enhancing connectivity from the state to key destinations nationwide. The initiative, aimed at bolstering tourism, business, and cultural exchanges, promises to be a game-changer for Odisha’s aviation landscape.
Under the new services, flights were introduced from Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) in Bhubaneswar to Jaipur, Kochi, Lucknow, and Patna. Similarly, flights from Veer Surendra Sai Airport (VSSA) in Jharsuguda now connect to Hyderabad, Raipur, and Lucknow.
The flights are operated by Air India Express and Star Air, adding new dimensions to Odisha’s domestic connectivity. The expanded services are expected to significantly benefit professionals, families, students, and naval personnel.
Inaugural Flights Flagged Off
The inaugural flights from Bhubaneswar to Jaipur and Kochi were flagged off by Ekamra Bhubaneswar MLA Babu Singh. Services to Lucknow are scheduled to commence on Saturday, followed by flights to Patna on January 15.
Speaking on the occasion, Singh noted, “These new routes will ease travel for diverse groups and foster economic and cultural exchanges.”
With the addition of these new routes, Air India Express now operates a total of 104 weekly flights from Bhubaneswar. The airline connects the city to major Indian hubs such as Bengaluru, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Patna, and Pune.
Adding a cultural touch to its fleet, Air India Express unveiled an aircraft adorned with a stunning Ikat livery, paying homage to Odisha’s rich textile heritage.
Boosting Tourism and Economic Development
Usha Padhee, Principal Secretary, Commerce and Transport Department, emphasised the broader implications of the expanded air services. She said, “This strategic expansion is poised to drive growth in the tourism and aviation sectors while boosting economic development and creating stronger ties across the nation.”
Odisha’s NDP 2024 aligns with the state’s vision of positioning itself as a hub for tourism and business. By improving connectivity to key cities, the state aims to attract both domestic and international visitors, creating opportunities for economic growth and cultural exchange.
The launch of these services under the NDP 2024 reflects Odisha’s commitment to enhancing its infrastructure and regional integration. With the aviation sector playing a pivotal role in driving economic development, these new flights mark a significant milestone in the state’s journey toward progress and connectivity.
As Odisha strengthens its air network, the benefits are expected to ripple across sectors, fostering a more connected and prosperous future for the state and its people.
