A spell of thunderstorms, gusty winds, and early morning rain led to significant disruptions in flight schedules at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport on Friday, causing delays and diversions for several passengers.

Delhi International Airport Ltd (DIAL), the airport operator, confirmed that some flights were affected due to the inclement weather. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) at 5:20 am, DIAL informed passengers that thunderstorms had impacted operations and assured that their teams were working closely with all stakeholders to manage the situation.

“Due to inclement weather conditions and thunderstorms in Delhi, some flights have been impacted at Delhi Airport. Our on-ground teams are diligently working with all stakeholders to ensure a seamless and efficient passenger experience,” the statement read.

The airport also advised passengers to check with their respective airlines for the latest flight updates, urging them to contact airlines for accurate flight information.

Air India, one of the major carriers operating from Delhi, also acknowledged the impact of the weather. In a post at 5:51 am, the airline informed passengers that adverse weather conditions had disrupted flight operations across parts of northern India, with several flights to and from Delhi either delayed or diverted. Air India stated that efforts were being made to minimize the disruptions and ensure smooth operations.

“Some of our flights to and from Delhi are being delayed or diverted, which is likely to impact our overall flight schedule. We are doing our best to minimise disruptions,” Air India said.

Indira Gandhi International Airport, the busiest airport in the country, witnesses nearly 1,300 flight movements every day. Due to its high traffic, the airport is particularly susceptible to weather-related disruptions, especially during the monsoon season.

Friday’s stormy weather, which brought much-needed relief from the ongoing heatwave in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR), caused heavy rain and thunderstorms, temporarily cooling the region. The rain brought relief to Noida and other parts of NCR, which had been enduring extreme heat in the preceding days.

The airport authorities continue to monitor the situation and are urging passengers to stay updated through airline channels for any further changes to their flight schedules.
