The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has revealed that the leading reason behind flight cancellations in India in September was technical issues.

DGCA’s data showed that 41.6 per cent of all the disruptions were caused by technical issues.

Technical issues were followed by weather-linked disruptions which accounted for 17.8 per cent of all cancellations. Unforeseen heavy rains in Mumbai and Kolkata resulted in numerous flight delays and cancellations.

Operational challenges, including crew unavailability and logistical issues, accounted for 11.9 per cent of cancellations. In contrast, commercial reasons, such as low passenger loads, were responsible for just 0.8 per cent of cancellations, indicating that airlines prioritise maintaining schedules even with fewer passengers. Particularly during peak seasons, airlines often opt to run flights with low capacity to uphold brand reliability and retain customer trust.

The remaining 27.9 per cent of cancellations were due to miscellaneous causes, which may include security threats, air traffic control delays, or airport infrastructure issues.
