Air India group announced that certain domestic operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) will be relocated due to expansion works at Terminal 3 (T3) by Delhi International Airport Ltd. (DIAL), aimed at increasing international passenger capacity. The relocation will come into effect from 26 October 2025.
Air India will move 60 out of its 180 daily domestic departures to the upgraded Terminal 2 (T2). Meanwhile, Air India Express will operate all its domestic flights from the renovated Terminal 1 (T1). International operations for both airlines will continue from T3.
Air India Flights to T2 Renumbered; Identifying Flights Made Easy
Air India’s domestic flights operating from or arriving at T2 will now be renumbered in four digits, starting with ‘1’ (for example, AI1737, AI1787). “This clear distinction will help travellers to easily identify that their flight operates from/to T2,” the airline said.
Seamless Inter-Terminal Transfers for Passengers
Passengers with connecting flights carrying boarding passes for onward journeys will be provided inter-terminal transfers between T1, T2, and T3. This service applies to connections between Air India, Air India Express, and applicable codeshare flights. Any through-checked baggage will be transferred airside, eliminating the need to collect and recheck bags during terminal changes.
DIAL will operate a free shuttle service between terminals every 10 minutes to facilitate smooth connectivity. Passengers with reduced mobility (PRM) or special assistance needs can also use a comfortable buggy ride between T2 and T3.
Airline Deploys Extra Resources for Smooth Transition
Air India and Air India Express will proactively notify all affected passengers through their registered contact details. “Passengers making new Air India bookings on AI1XXX-series flights (departing from T2) will be clearly notified that their flight operates from T2. Guests booking Air India Express domestic flights for travel from/to Delhi will also receive notifications,” the airline said.
Passengers whose bookings continue from T3 will receive reminders to check their terminal, especially if they have connecting flights. Online check-in for AI1XXX-series flights will include an additional reminder about departure from T2. Additional ground staff, easily identifiable by special t-shirts, will be deployed at both terminals to assist passengers.
Passengers Advised to Verify Flight and Terminal Details
All Air India and Air India Express passengers are urged to update their contact details in bookings to receive timely notifications. Guests are also advised to verify flight schedules and terminal information before travel via the official airline websites, mobile apps, or 24×7 customer service channels.
