IndiGo announced adjustments in flight schedules
Following the technical glitch, IndiGo Airlines, India’s largest carrier, announced adjustments to some flight schedules as the system was being restored. The airlines stated it was working with the airport and ATC teams to resume full operations.
In a post on X, IndiGo stated, ‘’Airport operator and ATC teams are working on a priority to fully restore systems and stabilise operations. The situation is likely to be normalised over the next few hours. During this period, some departure and arrival timings may continue to be adjusted.” The airline further added that its ground teams were ‘’actively assisting customers with updated schedules, onward connections, and real-time information to help make any unavoidable wait more manageable.”
What was the technical glitch that affected the key air traffic system for over 15 hours?
The AMSS (Automatic Message Switching System), which handles the transmission of flight plan messages for ATC, developed a glitch around 5:45 am on Friday. The outage lasted for over 15 hours, forcing controllers to prepare flight plans manually. This was a time-consuming process that slowed down takeoffs and landings, as per a report by PTI.
The Airport Authority of India (AAI) stated that the additional personnel were deployed to ensure safety while the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) worked on solving the issue. In a statement, AAI confirmed, “The technical issue in the AMSS, which caused delays in processing flight plan messages, has been addressed. The OEM was engaged and additional staff were deployed to manually process flight plans for the Air Traffic Control system to ensure unhindered and safe air traffic operations.”
More than 800 flights were delayed on Friday, with some cancellations also reported. On Saturday morning, tracking data displayed that over 200 flights were still delayed as normalcy gradually returned. The Delhi Airport, which handles around 1,500 flight movements daily, was among the worst affected.
