Expressing dismay over the rising cost of domestic airfares to pristine destinations in the northeast, travel agencies and hotel operators are calling for government intervention. The cost of flights to destinations like Shillong is reportedly exceeding airfares to international locations such as Thailand.

Comparative Analysis: Airfare from Delhi to Bangkok vs. Airfare from Delhi to Shillong

In a recent B2B meet at the International Tourism Mart, discussions revolved around the startling contrast in airfares. Travel agents revealed that as of December 1, the one-way airfare from Delhi to Bangkok is Rs 11,470, while flights to Shillong cost around Rs 14,974. This price differential raised concerns among industry stakeholders.

Call for Government Action

Entrepreneurs from the tourism industry across Northeastern states unanimously agree that flights from Delhi/Mumbai to Bangkok are more economical than those to regional capitals like Shillong or Agartala. Seeking fairness in domestic airfares, they have called upon the Government of India to intervene and establish pricing caps to rectify the imbalance.

Financial Boost for Northeastern Tourism development

Amidst the airfare concerns, the Union Tourism Ministry has approved over Rs 1,300 crore for 16 projects in the northeast under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme. Additionally, 15 projects are in progress under Swadesh Darshan (SD) 2.0, emphasizing the government’s commitment to enhancing tourism infrastructure in the region.

Meghalaya, a key player in Northeastern tourism, has been allocated two schemes — Sohra and Shillong — under SD 2.0, attracting an investment of up to Rs 50 crore. The PRASHAD Scheme has also sanctioned eight projects worth Rs 256.45 crore for the integrated development of pilgrimage destinations in the region.

Air and Rail Connectivity Progress

Despite airfare challenges, officials highlight significant progress in air and rail connectivity. The northeast now boasts 16 operational airports and 53 tourism routes under the RCS-UDAN Scheme. Notably, railways have extended their reach to connect seven states in the region, contributing to enhanced accessibility for tourists.
