An Indore-bound Air India flight returned to Delhi Airport on Sunday morning after the cockpit crew got a fire indication from one of its engines shortly after taking off. The airline has confirmed that the aircraft has landed safely and all passengers were shifted to an alternative flight to Indore.
The flight AI2913 was being operated with an Airbus A320neo aircraft. As per flight tracking data from Flightradar24, the plane was up in the air for more than 30 minutes before diverting back to the national capital. There were more than 90 passengers on board at the time of the incident, as per reports.
Air India’s statement on the incident
In a statement, Air India said that the flight returned safely to Delhi Airport and that the plane had been grounded for investigation.
“Flight AI2913, operating from Delhi to Indore on 31 August, air-returned to Delhi shortly after taking off, as the cockpit crew got a fire indication for the right engine. Following the standard procedure, the cockpit crew chose to shut down the engine and returned to Delhi, where the flight landed safely,” the airline said, before adding, “The aircraft has been grounded for investigation, and passengers are being shifted to an alternative aircraft, which will run the flight to Indore shortly.”
It further stated, “The regulator has been informed regarding the incident. We regret the inconvenience caused to the passengers. At Air India, the safety of passengers and crew is our top priority.’’

The airline highlighted that the decision to return was taken as a precautionary measure and in line with aviation safety norms. The technical teams are conducting a detailed examination of the aircraft.
Recently, an Air India flight from Bengaluru experienced a rough landing at Gwalior airport. The aircraft was carrying 150 passengers and attempted to touch down, but it pulled up again before making a safe landing on the second attempt. As per the reports, a brief technical error led the plane to change sides and lose control momentarily. Flight data from Flightradar24 indicates the flight took off from Bangalore at 10:50 am and finally landed in Gwalior at 1:30 pm.
