As we roll into October 2024, carmakers such as Maruti Suzuki, Tata, Hyundai, Mahindra, Kia, and Audi and others have shared their sales numbers for the month of September 2024.. Alongside carmakers, two-wheeler manufacturers such as Bajaj, TVS, Hero MotoCorp, and Honda have also shared their sales numbers.
Last month, the Maruti Suzuki Brezza was the top-seller, and SUVs topping the sales charts has been the norm for a while now. So the question is, can Maruti Suzuki hold on to its spot on the top, or can Tata steal the spot with the Punch or the Nexon with the discounts that were offered? More details will be known about this soon in terms of the best-selling cars in September 2024.
Also something to watch out for is the YoY sales — last month, many carmakers reported negative growth apart from Mahindra, who has seen a consistent growth over the last few months. This month, Mahindra, Toyota, Bajaj, Honda, and Hero MotoCorp have posted positive sales.
Auto Sales Day 1 highlights
So far, we have seen numbers from Mahindra, Kia, Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki, Toyota, and MG in the four-wheelers section, while Bajaj, Hero MotoCorp, and Honda have given details about their two-wheeler sales in September. Amongst the brands that have reported sales, Mahindra, Kia, and Toyota have reported positive growth, while Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, and MG have seen a decline in sales. In the two-wheeler category, all have reported positive sales.
September 2024 Auto Sales Live Highlights:
Audi, the German luxury carmaker, has registered sales of 3,889 units in the first nine months of 2024. Audi Approved: plus the pre-owned car business, grew 29% in the period January to September 2024 compared to the same period last year.
Chennai-based Royal Enfield has reported positive domestic growth for the first time in recent times. The motorcycle maker registered sales of 79,326 units in September 2024, witnessing a YoY growth of 7 percent. In terms of exports, RE sold 7,652 units last month, registering a 7 percent growth.
TVS is also a major player in the three-wheeler segment and its business recorded sales of 10,703 units in September 2024 as against 15,598 units in September 2023.
In September 2024, TVS’ two-wheeler sales stood at 4,71,792 units, witnessing a growth of 23 percent. Amongst them, motorcycles saw a growth of 23 percent while scooter sales grew by 20 percent. TVS’ EV sales say a growth of 42 percent in September 2024, registering sales of 28,901 units.
TVS has registered sales of 4,82,495 units in September 2024 as compared to selling 402,553 units in September 2023, registering a YoY growth of 20 percent. Last month, TVS also registered its highest-ever EV sales.

So far, we have seen numbers from Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors, Mahindra, MG, Toyota, Kia, Hyundai, Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj, and Honda two-wheelers. Yet to come in are from Royal Enfield, Suzuki, and others. Stay tuned for more highlights from day 2.
Hero MotoCorp has announced its sales numbers for September 2024. The company sold 6,37,050 units in the domestic market as compared to selling 5,36,499 units in September 2023, witnessing a YoY growth of 18.7 percent. Hero’s exports recorded sales of 20,344 units.
Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer, Marketing and Sales, Maruti Suzuki India, elaborated on the CNG sales traction, “September CNG vehicle sales crossed 50,000 mark. It is at 53,431 units, up 56.1% YoY. Share of CNG in total sales is now 34.1%, closer to the target of every third car being a CNG. The company is on track in achieving the target of 600,000 vehicle sales in this financial year. The recently launched Swift CNG saw a sale of 4471 vehicles in the first month after launch.”
Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer, Marketing and Sales, Maruti Suzuki India said that “Maruti’s rural growth is at 8.4% in H1 this year in FY25 with 3.5% increase in rural penetration. As a result, the H1 rural penetration is at 37.8% Vs last year’s overall 44.3% penetration in the entire year.”
During September 2024, Honda dispatched 4,83,100 units, registering a YoY growth of 43 percent. This includes domestic sales of 4,39,118 units and exports of 43,982 units. Honda’s exports grew by 60 percent in September.
In the commercial vehicle segment, Maruti Suzuki saw sales of 148,061 units for the month of September 2024, as compared to 153,106 units sold in September 2023, registering a sales decline of 3.2 percent.
Maruti Suzuki, India‘s largest carmaker, has registered domestic PV sales of 144,962 units as compared to selling 150,812 units in September last year, witnessing a decline of 3.8 percent. Maruti Suzuki’s UV range, which consists of the Brezza, Ertiga, Fronx, Grand Vitara, Invicto, Jimny, and XL6, have seen a marginal growth.
“In September, we introduced the bold new Hyundai Alcazar, which redefined the benchmark of aspirational 6/7-seater SUV. This introduction combined with strong performance from Exter, Venue and Creat propelled HMIL to its highest ever monthly SUV contribution of 70% to total sales. We also witnessed increased consumer demand for CNG powered vehicles, backed by the introduction of Dual Cylinder CNG in Exter and Grand i10 NIOS resulting in highest-ever CNG contribution of 13.8% to September sales. With the festive season kicking-in, we have introduced many new models and variants to meet customers aspirations, and our dealer touchpoints are fully geared up to delight customers with deliveries of their favourite Hyundai cars in this auspicious period.”

Hyundai, the second-largest carmaker in India in terms of volume, has registered sales of 64,201 units in September 2024. Hyundai’s domestic sales stood at 51,101 units while the company’s exports accounted for 13,100 units. For Hyundai, its SUV sales accounted for 70 percent sales last month.
Some big names in the industry are yet to announce their numbers — Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, TVS, Hero MotoCorp, Yamaha, and Suzuki will be announcing numbers shortly.
“The PV industry in Q2 FY25 saw more than 5% decline in retails (Vahan registrations) compared to Q2 FY24 driven by slow consumer demand and seasonal factors. In contrast, industry offtake was significantly higher than registrations in anticipation of a strong start to the festive season, resulting in a continued buildup of channel stock. In addition, Electric Vehicle sales in personal segment was affected by the lapse of registration and road tax waivers in key states. Fleet EV sales continued to remain impacted due to lapse of FAME II and non-inclusion of the fleet segment in PM-eDRIVE scheme.”

Tata Motors has also witnessed a decline in sales in its commercial vehicle business in September 2024. Last month, Tata’s domestic CV sales accounted for 28,631 units as compared to 37,214 units sold in September 2023, witnessing a 23 percent decline.
Tata Motors has registered a decline in YoY sales in September 2024. The carmaker sold 41,063 units last month, including EVs in the domestic market. As compared to September 2023, sales were down 8 percent this September compared to a year ago when Tata sold 44,809 units.

Kia, Hyundai‘s sister company, which sells the Seltos, Sonet, and Carens in India, has registered sales of 23,523 units in September 2024, witnessing a 14 percent growth. Last September, Kia sold 20,022 units. For Kia, the Sonet remains the best-seller, which competes with the Hyundai Venue and Tata Nexon amongst others in the segment.
Eicher Motors has registered sales of 6,847 units in September 2024, witnessing a 2 percent YoY growth. During the same time last year, Eicher sold 6,715 units. With exports, the company registered sales of 475 units, witnessing a 90 percent growth compared to September 2023.
In September 2024, the CV maker’s exports and domestic sales accounted for 17233 units as compared to 19202 units sold in September last year, witnessing a decline of 10 percent.
Ashok Leyland has reported a decline of 12 percent in its domestic sales. The commercial vehicle manufacturer’s domestic sales stood at 16,041 units in September 2024 as compared to 18193 units in September 2023.
So far, we have seen Mahindra, Bajaj, MG, and Toyota. All have reported positive growth apart from MG so far. Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki, TVS, Hero MotoCorp, Suzuki, and Tata Motors are yet to share their sales numbers and they will be in shortly.
In an official statement, Toyota said:
“As the festive fervour picks-up footfalls and enquiries are charged up which makes us positive of a very good festive season. Notably, our SUV, MPV, and small car segments have experienced significant growth nationwide, contributing over 90% to our sales in in the month of September.”

Toyota is another manufacturer who has seen consistent growth over time and September 2024 is nothing less. The carmaker has sold 26,847 units as compared to 23,590 units sold in September 2023. Toyota has registered a YoY growth of 14 percent.
So far, we have seen Mahindra post a strong 24 percent sales growth, while Bajaj has also seen an increase with its domestic and two-wheeler exports. Mahindra Tractors have also seen an increase, while MG India has posted a decline in sales. More numbers are yet to come, so stay tuned.
While carmakers have seen a decline in the last two months, October will bring them relief. Being the festive season, car sales and two-wheeler sales will see a boost. With several festivals lined up, expect October sales to see a significant increase.
Mahindra‘s on a roll, and its SUVs have kept the company’s growth strong. In September 2024, Mahindra registered sales of 51,062 SUVs, as compared to 41,267 SUVs sold in September 2023. Models such as the Scorpio N and the XUV700 remain strong sellers for Mahindra, while the newly-launched Thar Roxx also adds to its sales portfolio.

During September 2024, Bajaj’s commercial vehicle business registered sales of 69,042 units. Amongst them, domestic sales accounted for 52,554 units and 4 percent YoY growth, while its exports stood at 16,488 units, witnessing a 16 percent YoY growth.
