Hours after he was taken into judicial custody, former Karnataka chief minister B S Yeddyurappa was shifted to a hospital early Sunday morning with chest pain.

The 68-year-old BJP veteran had been remanded to judicial custody until October 22 after his plea for bail in two private complaints of alleged illegalities in land denotification near Bangalore had been rejected by the special Lokayukta court on Saturday.

Yeddyurappa had surrendered himself at the Lokayukta court on Saturday after the court issued a non-bailable warrant against him. He complained of chest pain around 1.30 am in jail and was admitted to the Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research.

He is being kept under observation for the next 48 hours, said chief minister D V Sadananda Gowda who visited him at the hospital with some cabinet ministers.

Yeddyurappa was forced to step down from the top post in July following his indictment in a Lokayukta report on illegal mining. His arrest in the alleged land scams also comes as an embarrassment to the BJP amid its ongoing campaign against corruption. The party has maintained that the accusations against Yeddyurappa have not been proven yet.

Yeddyurappa is likely to move the High Court with regard to the Lokayukta court order. Five private complaints had been filed against Yeddyurappa in January this year by two Bangalore based lawyers. Each complaint comprises three instances of alleged illegal denotification of land during Yeddyurappa’s term as chief minister.
