That she is the founder of Dastkari Haat Samiti and the creator of the concept of Dilli Haat is a fact well known. But for someone whose academic roots lie completely abroad, such passion for Indian crafts is, least said, remarkable. Her crafts journey really started in the sixties ? working with the local crafts people of Jammu & Kashmir to enhance their skills and earning capacity. From 1978-88 she worked as the design and marketing consultant for the state of Gujarat in the handicrafts sector before moving on to Gangotri as a consultant to develop the crafts of Uttar Pradesh. Her passion continues to drive her to map the rich craft heritage of India.
•What does success mean to you?
Success is achieving what I set out as my goal and knowing that the benficiaries of my effort are happy about it. For me success has nothing to do with money or fame but if there is some recognition of that success then the path to achieving further goals sometimes becomes relatively easier.
•What is your biggest strength?
I never allow myself to feel disheartened or depressed. I hate negative behaviour and respond to everything as positively as I can. A smile and a shrug can put off an opponent while conviction and commitment gives strength for bigger battles or creative efforts.
•What works as a stress buster for you?
Cuddling my dogs and grandchildren. I am sure my children will ask ?in which order of priority would that be??
•God to you is….?
God is not an outside entity for me. Godliness is goodness and is manifested in the actions and character of people and in many beautiful aspects of nature. If we seek, preserve and develop these we would be nearer to the idea of God, which is essentially a creation of the human mind to understand and improve the human condition and to face life.
