Gone are the days when soaps and serials on the idiot box were all about upper class people living in metropolitan cities. Rural India has taken the small screen by storm lately with programmes set in villages and small towns.

Even though majority of India still lives in villages, it is only now that the television industry has woken up to the potential of rural India as a setting for shows like ‘Devi’ and ‘Na Ana Is Des Laado’.

With the end of the lavish and luxurious ‘Saas-Bahu’ era – where the protagonists owned property worth crores and travelled in big cars – the nature of stories being told on TV has also changed.
