The government of Tamil Nadu sought two weeks time to take a decision on whether or not to release Nalini Sriharan, serving life imprisonment for her role in the assassination of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi. She has been behind bars for the past 19 years.
Submitting the report prepared by the prison advisory board to a Division Bench of the Madras High Court in a sealed cover on Thursday, advocate general PS Raman sought time so that the government could study the report before taking a decision on its recommendations. As per the rules, the government has the right to either accept or reject the report, which is recommendatory in nature and not binding on it in anyway. The report was being looked into ?at the highest level?, the AG informed the Bench adding that he himself had not studied its contents.
