Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mayawati and leader of the Opposition, Mulayam Singh Yadav took divergent stands on Bharatiya Kisan Union leader Mahendra Singh Tikait, who was arrested and granted bail in Bijnore on Wednesday, for allegedly using highly derogatory, casteist remarks against the chief minister.

Mayawati demanded the resignation of state home minister Sriprakash Jaiswal for his statement that Tikait should not be arrested. She said the minister should immediately resign on moral grounds and added that the attitude of the Congress leaders’ against the SC/ST Act clearly depicted its anti-dalit mentality evenon Wednesday.
