Favourable global cues led the Indian markets to open on a positive note on Thursday but profit booking at every high made the trading session volatile. Short covering at lower levels at the fag end of the session helped key indices end in positive terrain.
The 30-share Sensex of the BSE surged by 117.08 points or 0.66% to close at 17,734.68 points, while the broader S&P CNX Nifty of the NSE gained 37.35 points or 0.72% before closing at 5,191.80 points.
In the F&O segment, investors covered their short position the open interest (OI) in the Nifty February series as it shed 25.38 lakh shares in OI to 3.35 crore.
The contract was finally trading at 5,182.10 points, gaining 58.10 points or 1.13% as compared to its previous day?s close. It was trading at a marginal discount of 7 points compared to its spot price.
According to the provisional data from the stock exchanges, the foreign institutional investors bought equity shares worth Rs 209.43 crore on Thursday while the domestic institutional investors resorted to profit booking by selling equity shares worth Rs140.68 crore.
