The benchmark BSE Sensex surged 216 points in pre-close trading on Thursday on emergence of buying by funds in heavy-weights led by metal and cement.

The Sensex, which began the day on a strong note, rose 216.21 points to 14,219.24 points at 1500 hrs. Similarly, National Stock Exchange index Nifty spurted by 59.40 points to 4,172.45 points.

The BSE-30 share index had lost 127.92 points yesterday, but climbed over one per cent in the first five minutes of trading on the back of a big rise in heavy-weight stocks.
