The Supreme Court on Wednesday reserved its verdict on a petition seeking monitoring of the investigation into 2G spectrum case by the apex court. A bench comprising justices G S Singhvi and AK Ganguly concluded the marathon hearing. However, this does not mean that the heat is off the government in the spectrum scam. The SC, which has issued notices to the government and the Chief Vigilance Commissioner, PJ Thomas on another petition challenging his appointment comes up for hearing on January 27. Since Thomas was a former DoT secretary the hearing of that case would have a bearing on the spectrum case also irrespective of what it decides on the case dealing with monitoring the CBI probe.
Specific to the case the likely scenarios would be the following: If the court decides to monitor the progress the CBI would have to report to it the progress regarding the investigation. If it does not then the agency would function in its normal course but in that case a fresh PIL can be filed if anybody feels that the progress regarding the investigation is tardy.
