Use of dimmers and sensors can significantly cut down the electricity bill

Offices can make significant savings in the monthly electricity bill through the use of dimming devices and light sensors. US-based Lutron Electronics, a pioneer in lighting controls, offers a wide range of such products for commercial and domestic applications in the Indian markets now.

According to S Pekka Hakkarainen, vice-president of Lutron Electronics? global operations, ?Lutron?s dimming technology reduces energy consumption and extends the lifespan of a bulb. For instance, dimming the light by 25% can save 20% of electricity and extend bulb life by four times. Dimming by 50% can save 40% of electricity and make your light bulb last 20 times longer.? Also, by deploying occupancy sensors (wired or wireless), offices can dim lights to the minimum or turn them off when the space is unoccupied. This will save 15% of lighting usage, depending on the actual traffic.

Offices can make the best use of daylight and dim or switch off electric light when there is abundant daylight by using Lutron?s automated shades which will save 15% of lighting usage. The use of shades can also reduce heat generated from sunlight, thus, reducing the consumption of air-conditioning.

Hakkarainen said in the US, Lutron?s Quantum total light and energy management system has achieved 70% savings in lighting electricity usage at The New York Times Company?s new headquarters.

The multinational company has found a receptive market in India, with awareness about green buildings catching up in industry. ?India is always one of our key markets in Asia. As both US and European markets are slowing down, the Asia market, including India, has become more important in our global growth matrix. We will continue to invest in the Indian market to grow together with the Indian economy,? Hakkarainen told FE in an exclusive interaction. The company has offices in, Mumbai and Bangalore.
