Irda has said unit-linked insurance plan holders would now have to pay up to Rs 6,000 if they want to discontinue the scheme during the first four years of the lock-in period of five years. Irda in its new guidelines has stitched in some stiff norms touching upon various aspects such as tenure, coverage amount and total charges for Ulips and have also modified rules for pension products. The insurance regulator has asked the life insurers to follow the new guidelines from September 1. Irda said the charges for discontinuation of Ulips had been capped between Rs 1,000 and Rs 6000, depending on the premium paid by the policyholder.
