Kerala government said a comprehensive probe would be ordered to ascertain the reason behind the explosion in the control panel of a generator at Moolamattam power house in Idukki district last night, which left two persons injured, besides causing power disruption.

?A probe will be ordered into the cause of the blast which occurred at around 6 pm yesterday, causing damage to one of the six underground generators,? power Minister Arayadan Mohammed told reporters in Kochi.

Two employees of the Kerala State Electricity Board who were taking readings suffered serious burns after the panel caught fire and exploded and have been hospitalised.

The power house was shut down immediately after the incident, following which supply across the state was disrupted and KSEB resorted to 30 minute loadshedding. Police and district administration sources, however, discounted chances of sabotage behind the incident.

The minister, who also visited the two engineers in hospital, said hectic efforts are on to resume electricity generation by this afternoon. In case it was delayed the state would borrow additional power from the Southern Grid to make up the deficit, he said.

Top KSEB officials are at Moolamattom inspecting the mishap spot. All six generators will be examined today. Moolamattam power station comes under state’s biggest Hydel power project– the 780 mw Idukki project, which accounts for nearly 60 per cent of the state’s domestic electricity production.
