In a first of its kind initiative, Haryana has approved a 6 mw power plant to be set up in Barwala (district Panchkula), where power will be generated from poultry waste.
As per the Haryana Renewable Energy Development Agency (Hareda) Gurgaon-based Emergent Ventures, US-based Indus Terra Energy and Haryana Poultry Farmers Association will have a stake in the power plant. The estimated cost of this project is around Rs 40 crore and it is likely to be complete in one year from the date of allotment. The power generated will be sold to state power utilities at tariffs fixed by the Haryana Electricity Regulatory commission.
Sharing details about the project, a senior Hareda official said, ?Since Barwala has about 133 poultry farms registered with the poultry farmers association it becomes a hub of poultry farms in Haryana. With about 81 lakh birds in these farms around 1,100 tonnes of poultry waste is generated everyday. But there is no regular waste disposal system and the waste is used as manure in the fields. Some of the waste is buried which creates pollution problems.? The new project, in other words, will take the environmental and waste disposal issues head on.
The project will be developed in two phases with one unit of 3 mw to be set up in the first phase and another unit of 3 mw set up in the second phase. It is estimated that around 775 tonne of poultry waste will be used per day to generate 6 mw of power. The project will be based on bio-methanation through digestion route. The biogas generated form the digestor shall be converted into electricity through biogas engine.
As per the guidelines of the Haryana State Renewable Energy Policy, private parties can set up renewable energy projects in Haryana via two routes. First when Hareda invites the parties for setting up the projects under self identified category.
