It is shocking that even after almost 24 years, justice remains denied to those directly or indirectly affected by the Bhopal gas tragedy. Worse, the question of cleaning up the site is still unresolved (?People or Payment??, May 19). Groundwater remains contaminated and hazardous waste that lies buried around the site poses lethal risks to life. Dow Chemicals maintains that sabotage caused the tragedy. In fact, the gas leak became a horrendous tragedy because Union Carbide refused to shift the plant away from the densely-populated area, citing the costs involved.
