The government on Thursday announced made compulsory packaging of food grains and sugar in jute bag but made exceptions for bulk consignments and small packs. According to Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, the order has to be valid during July-June 2008-09 jute year.

?The decision will provide sustenance to millions of people engaged in the jute sector,” an official statement said.

However, jute bags would not be required for bulk packaging of more than 100 kg. Similarly, small consumer packs of 25 kgs and below would be exempted from the decision as would be sugar fortified with vitamins and exportable commodities. In case of any shortage or disruption in supply of jute packaging material, the Textile Ministry would further relax the provisions up to a maximum of 20 per cent for foodgrain and sugar.
