In the wake of complaints regarding poor quality of broadband speed, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India on Thursday initiated a consultation process on ?Bandwidth required for ISPs for better connectivity and improved quality of service?. ?
The authority suo-moto initiated this consultation process to seek the views of the stakeholders in order to the strengthen the existing regulations on quality of broadband service to ensure reasonable assured quality to Internet subscribers.
The regulator has said that?incidences were reported where subscribers alleged that speed of their broadband connections was much less than subscribed speed.
Trai said, ?A strong need is being felt to identify easily monitorable and enforceable quality of service (QoS) measures particularly in regard to access speed to ensure that a bare minimum (floor) bandwidth is available with service providers for provisioning of broadband and Internet services.
An increasing number of broadband subscribers and development of various applications demanding high-bandwidth, such as IPTV, and peer-to-peer file sharing have emphasised the need to ensure high quality broadband connections, it added.
