Fifty-four per cent of Americans believe the Iraq war is not lost, a UPI/Zogby poll found two weeks before Congress hears a crucial report on the White House’s “surge” strategy in the conflict.

Asked about US President George W Bush’s decision this year to send 30,000 additional troops to Iraq, however, 49 per cent of 6,711 adults consulted in the poll said the strategy was not working, against 45 per cent who said it was.

And 34 per cent in the August 17-20 survey believed a US victory in Iraq was not possible, while 37 per cent said it will be possible when the Iraqi government takes control of security in its territory.

Top US military commander in Iraq, General David Petraeus, and US Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker will testify to Congress the week of September 10 about military and political developments in Iraq, particularly since the new “surge” strategy took effect.
